New Parents Need Disability Insurance!

(and new parents with existing Disability Insurance need to review their coverage)

Becoming a "new parent" is an occupation. And a full time job!  A great one at that.

If you are expecting a baby, or are a new parent, you have a real need for Disability Income Insurance.  Your family's income is used to fund your family budget, and now you are adding another person to that budget, a young baby that will contribute no income, only expenses.

You have a need for income protection, to have a source of income coming in each month even if an injury or illness is preventing you from earning that income. That is the value of Disability Insurance.

A New Baby Brings New Expenses to the Family Budget.

Most of us have the same line items in our family budget.

We all pay rent, or a mortgage monthly, have to allocate part of our income to the phone and electric bill, and other income to buying groceries, clothes, and other things we need. Some of us have a car payment, or student loan payments.

And we cover these expenses with our income.

A new baby adds line items to your family budget.

There will be new expenses for feeding, diapers, clothes, toys and other needed everyday items. Childcare is a big expense to add to your family budget. Add in more health insurance premium and out of pocket medical expenses.

And as the child grows new expenses are added. It is amazing how the costs of sports and dance programs can add a whole new line item to your budget.

You pay for these expenses with your income. Disability insurance will if you cannot because of illness or injury.

Disability Insurance is an important coverage for anyone who earns an income. But even more important for parents, as it is not just you and maybe a spouse counting on your income financially. Your children are too!

Disability Insurance ensures families can go on as before, at least financially, if a parent is disabled and cannot earn an income.

Michael’s Real Life Story with Disability Insurance

At age 26 Michael Sizemore was living two of his dreams. He was training daily to participate in his first marathon. And he was enjoying his new job in the nonprofit organization where he worked. After years of study and earning his masters degree in public administration, he felt prepared to start his life’s mission of helping others.

But those dreams came crashing down around him one night while he was out with friends. As they were walking across the street, a drunk driver ran a red light at high speed and hit Michael.

His injures were so severe that doctors were unsure if he would survive. He was placed in an induced coma. There were countless surgeries to treat his head injuries, repair his shattered legs and address the multitude of other injuries he suffered.

Through strength, determination and a lot of rehabilitation, Michael continues to improve, but was unable to return to work for a long time. And that meant he could not earn an income to pay for expenses.

Thankfully he had long-term Disability Insurance in place. The insurance coverage covered his budget through all of the time he was out of work, and funded his family budget. He did not need to worry about costs. He could instead focus on improving his health and moving forward with his life.

Ten Years Later, Michael is Married and a New Parent.

Michael has advocated for the importance of having Disability Insurance along with “Life Happens" (a non-profit group that works to get the word out on Disability Insurance) for many years.

They worked together to produce this “life update” on Michael. Watch the video, Michael is now married, and they have a 3 1/2 year old son! Hi family’s future is bright.

And Michael makes it clear in the video, all of the great things in his life, family, a new house purchase, “None of that would be possible without Disability Insurance.”
